Dadasaheb Phalke Award 2023 has been announced, Get the Complete List, The Kashmir Files won the Best Film Award at the Dadasaheb Phalke International Film Festival, and Anupam Kher was named the Most Versatile Actor of the Year for his work in the movie.

Dadasaheb Phalke Award is the Nation’s highest honour for contributions to cinema.

The Dadasaheb Phalke Award is given annually at the National Film Awards ceremony by the Directorate of Film Festivals, a body established by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. It is acknowledged that the honoree “outstandingly contributed to the growth and development of Indian cinema.” And these winners are chosen by a  committee made up of prominent figures from the Indian film industry.

The most recent Dadasaheb Phalke International Film Festival Awards were held in the presence of notable TV and Bollywood stars who have made contributions to Indian cinema and were recognised at the ceremony.

For her stirring performance in Gangubai Kathiyawadi, Alia Bhatt won the Best Actress prize, and her husband won the Best Actor prize for Brahmastra (Part 1: Shiva). The prize includes a medallion known as the Swarna Kamal (Golden Lotus), a shawl, and a cash payment of 1,000,000 rupees ($13,000).

Who was Dadasaheb Phalke?

The original name of Dadasaheb Phalke was Dhundiraj Govind Phalke. He was born on April 30, 1870, to a Chitpavan Brahmin family who spoke Marathi in Trimbak, Maharashtra. 

He attended Mumbai’s Sir JJ School of Art to study acting and photography.  Then, in order to further his interest in finance, he went to Germany. He created Raja Harishchandra, India’s first full-length silent movie, and returning home, he produced Raja Harishchandra, the Nation’s first complete silent film. For his sincere devotion to and conviction in cinema, he was given the honorary title of “Father of Indian Cinema.

The Dada Saheb Phalke Award was later established by the Indian government in 1969 to honour his outstanding contributions and to recognise and honour the best performances of the year across a range of categories.
